Birgit Matthiesen

BIRGIT MATTHIESEN
Economic and Trade Policy Division
Embassy of Canada
Washington

Mrs. Matthiesen is the Policy Advocate for the Embassy's Economic and Trade Policy Division.  Her responsibilities within the Economic and Trade Policy Division is to monitor and analyse U.S. legislative and regulatory developments as they affect Canadian exports to the United States. Her advocacy efforts are aimed at streamlining border entry policies in order to reduce “border costs” wherever possible and to find cooperative approaches to the management of the bilateral trade.

Prior to her duties in Washington, Mrs. Matthiesen worked for the Canadian Employment and Immigration Commission where she held numerous positions - including the Refugee Review Directorate.  Her career, however, began as a Canada Customs inspector on Interstate 89 in southern Quebec.  She, therefore, enjoys a unique perspective of the Canada/US border - both from actual border experience as well as the broader policy formulation perspective.

Born in Germany, Mrs. Matthiesen was raised in Quebec. She is a graduate of Dawson College and Concordia University of Montreal and received her graduate degree from George Mason University (International Trade Policy) in Arlington, Va.

She currently lives in Northern Virginia with her husband.
